چکیده

The difficulties and instabilities accompanying the inversion of radiance data to infer temperature structure are closely related to the high degree of interdependence existing among these nominally independent measurements. The radiance measurements discussed in the accompanying papers are shown to be interdependent to a marked degree. It is shown that one of the measurements can be predicted from the others with an accuracy which is only a little worse than the experimental accuracy, The application of this kind of analysis to determine optimum choices of measurements and the information content thereof is outlined.

Indirect Measurements of Atmospheric Temperature Profiles from Satellites: Iv. Experiments with the Phase 1 Satellite Infrared Spectrometer

A “breadboard” model of the proposed satellite infrared spectrometer for the measurement of atmospheric temperature profiles was used in two experiments a t ground level. These were designed to demonstrate the feasibility of the instrument and to investigate some of the hazards involved in inverting the radiation integral. I t is shown in the second experiment that realistic temperature profile...

Physically Retrieving Cloud and Thermodynamic Parameters from Ultraspectral IR Measurements

A physical inversion scheme has been developed dealing with cloudy as well as cloud-free radiance observed with ultraspectral infrared sounders to simultaneously retrieve surface, atmospheric thermodynamic, and cloud microphysical parameters. A fast radiative transfer model, which applies to the clouded atmosphere, is used for atmospheric profile and cloud parameter retrieval. A one-dimensional...

Indirect Measurements of Atmospheric Temperature Profiles F R O M Satellites : 111 . the Spectrometers and Experiments

Three spectrometers and associated experiments are described. The work reviewed comprises the early experimental phases of a program to develop a satellite infrared spectrometer capable of making radiometric measurements in the 15-micron carbon dioxide band needed for deduction of atmospheric temperature profiles. Initially, a simplified, breadboard spectrometer with four spectral channels was ...

A physical temperature profiling method using gradient flows

We present a new mathematical technique for retrieving the temperature profile from a ground based microwave profiler and ancillary measurements. It is based on a gradient flow approach. We are able to solve the inverse problem of radiative transfer and determine the temperature profile from ten simultaneous brightness temperature measurements in the range from 50.8 to 58.8 GHz. The approach us...
